A business person I was interviewing for a story last week used the phrase “true north calling” to speak of a passion rooted in one’s heart. At first blush it sounded to me like executive motivational jargon, but if it’s a new catch phrase, the Google hasn’t heard of it yet. Maybe the phrase resonates with me because True North has been important to navigation for eons, and it’s something not always easy to find. Just like our own calling. True North is exists outside of ourselves. Outside the planet, even. It’s a direction, not a destination. Just like our own calling. We have had magnetic devices for a while that can help find True North. They are magic. They help, but they almost never point True North, just a different kind of north, which is often close enough.
